You don’t realise what impact you are having

Sometimes I put out a piece of content that really hits home. One of these was my podcast and article last month talking about the ripple effect – the idea that you never really appreciate what impact you are making with your business until much later.

A number of you got in touch to tell me about your own ‘ripple effect’ moments but I experienced one of my own at the Scotland Vegan Festival last weekend. The photo above is with Amit who approached me on our VBT stand, shook hands and very politely asked me how my wife Lisa and my daughter Awen were doing. I had one of those panic moments where I was obviously talking to someone who knew me, but I couldn’t for the life of me recall who they were!

It turns out I wasn’t having a ‘senior moment’, we’d never met. Amit is from India and he’d just moved to Scotland with his family that week. He’s building a training platform with grant funding to help corporations support their employees to be more sustainable. He’s followed Vegan Business Tribe almost since we started and saw that we were going to be at the festival and wanted to say hello.

The longer we keep doing what we’re doing, the more I have these kinds of interactions and it makes me realise that we’re reaching more people then I will ever appreciate. It will be the same for your business. So if you feel like you’re talking to yourself half the time, know that you will have people like Amit in your audience too and that you might not know what impact you are having on them until, potentially, years later.
