I was interviewed on the The Bloody Vegans Podcast this week by our VBT member Sue Joyce. It’s a great show where vegans just chat – obviously a lot of that talk is related to veganism, but some of it isn’t too. Before Sue hit record she said ‘I’m going to try and get under your mask today and get to the real David!’. I don’t know when the show is out, but you’ll have to let me know if you think she managed to once you’ve listened to it!
One of the questions Sue asked me at the end of the interview threw me for a minute. She asked ‘What would you do if someone gave you a million dollars?’. It made me pause because there are a lot of things I could do to bring about good in the world with that kind of money, but eventually I said ‘I’d give it to someone else’.
That answer surprised me, and I think surprised Sue too. But the more I’ve thought about it since the interview the more I like it as an answer. I’ve met people who have done so much with so little. I call them dandelions: most flowers need exact soil conditions, temperatures and exposure else they wilt and die. Dandelions take a tiny crack in the pavement and explode into a riot of colour and growth.
We have a number of dandelions in VBT and I’d love to see what those people would do if, instead of being given a crack in the pavement, we gave them a bag full of (veganic) fertiliser.
What about you? What would you do with a million dollars?
