Lisa and I found a new vegan cafe this week. It was a recommendation from a friend who said we absolutely had to try it, and it was everything a vegan cafe should be. The food was unhealthy, the waitress got every part of our order slightly wrong and it was so small that we had to brave an outside table in single-figure temperatures.
We loved it.
One of the reasons that vegan companies have struggled this year is because vegan has gone mainstream. You can get vegan muffins in Starbucks and buy own-brand vegan burgers in the supermarket for less than it takes smaller companies to make. But there’s still something special about going to a place where you know people view veganism as a way of life and code of ethics, not a food category.
Scoffs Feel Good Food Cafe in Horsforth, near Leeds, is vegan owned and run. They have hand-painted vegan symbols in the paintwork surrounding the door and the staff chat with you about the merits of different types of plant-milk in your coffee (which is why I think I ended up with an oat-latte instead of a black americano!). We were soon also chatting with the people sat at the tables around us, something that only ever happens at vegan places.
It’s similar to Vegan Business Tribe – many of our members have become our friends for life simply because we all share the same ethics. The support, community and camaraderie between vegans in business is not found in any other sector and is what makes us so strong. If you have a vegan business, then everyone in VBT wants you to succeed, even if they haven’t even met you yet.
So we’ll be back at Scoffs, as we only got to try two of their ten cakes and the staff were so friendly that you easily forgave any slip-ups. And it’s important to have somewhere you can go where you feel you belong as a vegan. Again, like having you around us at Vegan Business Tribe.
