Give us your ideas to help us mould the future of Vegan Business Tribe

Before the world got turned upside down with Coronavirus, Vegan Business Tribe was going to launch as a paid-for content site.

However – in the few months since we’ve opened up the site for free to help business during the lockdown, we have been overwhelmed by the amount of humbling feedback. How can we put up a paywall if that means only a fraction of vegan businesses would get access to this content that’s helping so many?

Help us define the journey of Vegan Business Tribe with this questionnaire.

It will take about 5 minutes to complete, but will help us hugely in keeping as much content as free as possible.

If you have any problems completing the survey, or would just prefer to send your thoughts in an email, please email hello@veganbusinesstribe.com

There is a story about why launched Vegan Business Tribe…

At the start of 2020, we were asked to speak at the Plant Powered Expo at London Olympia about how to run a successful vegan business.  In our day jobs, Lisa and I run Promote Vegan, an agency helping businesses succeed in the vegan and plant-based marketplaces.  Usually we talk about vegan consumer trends, or about helping multi-national brands bring out better plant-based offerings, so being asked to talk specifically about how someone can better run a vegan business was a really exciting idea.

We were blown away by how many people packed into the auditorium to watch us speak that day, with many having to stand.  But that was nothing compared with the line of people who patiently queued up after to ask Lisa and I for help with their vegan business after the event – or to get our feedback on their idea.

Of course, we’d have loved to spent an hour talking to each, but simply couldn’t, and that’s when the idea for Vegan Business Tribe was born.  Could we build a tribe of vegan businesses that we could help in a collective way?  Can we take all the advice we give to the big brands you see on the high street and the supermarket shelves and repackage that knowledge to help smaller, truly vegan companies?  And can we help connect all these budding vegan entrepreneurs to give advice to each other so we can all build our vegan businesses together?

So that’s what we did.  And because we’ve launched, built-up (and sold!) a number of businesses ourselves over the years, we know the importance of having the right advice at the right moment so wanted to make that advice affordable – settling on the idea of a set fee of £10 a month. No contracts, sign-up and cancel whenever you like.  About the same as you currently pay for Spotify or Netflix but much more likely to get your vegan business off the ground!

And then the world got turned upside down.

Coronavirus hit, countries got plunged into lockdown and the stories we were seeing of vegan businesses losing 100% of their revenue overnight was heartbreaking.  These were people who we first started as customers of, but now considered them friends. We had to do something, we had to open up this repository of advice for vegan businesses we’d just spent three months building for free to help as many as we could get through this time.  Although we knew that many businesses might not survive through this time, we knew that others would with the right advice and that the ‘new normal’ would open up lots of new opportunities if you were able to adapt quickly enough.

Now that lockdown restrictions are starting to ease, we’ve been starting to think about when would be the right time to re-introduce membership fees. One of the huge bits of advice I always give is that you can do far more good in the world if you have something that is making money than something that is costing you to run.  If it’s not generating an income, no venture will ever be sustainable. Lisa and I have been really fortunate that we’ve been able to self-fund the site (and the content creation) during lock-down from the money we earn ‘from the day job’, but that also means it’s not sustainable in the long term.

However – we have been overwhelmed by the amount of humbling feedback, the success stories, and the new amazing friends we’ve made over the last few months of opening up the site for free.  We’ve had people telling us that a single video they watched doubled their enquiries. We’ve helped people get their vegan business into a national magazine.  We’ve helped people find funding opportunities that will make their vegan business dreams come true. How can we put up a paywall if that means only a fraction of vegan businesses would get access to this content?

So, we’re rethinking what Vegan Business Tribe is going to become, and that’s where you, our amazing new friends, come in.

How can we keep the content free and open for everyone – but the website still (at least) cover its costs and (at best) allow Lisa and I dedicate more of our time to helping you? What else do you want from our tribe? What specific help do you need and how can we better bring this community together? And finally, if we’re trying to make as much as this as free as possible, what other things WOULD you pay for to help us do that?  We’ve got some ideas, from crowd-funding to mentoring, but we really want to hear yours first.

Completing our survey will take you about 5 minutes but it will really help.  And if you’d rather send your feedback by email, you can do that too by emailing hello@veganbusinesstribe.com
