You might have seen that the VegfestUK Awards made a welcome return this year and, somehow, I missed that Vegan Business Tribe had been nominated for ‘Best Vegan Podcast’. I knew that many of our members were up for an award, in fact I’d been re-sharing their social posts asking people to vote for them, but I’d completely overlooked the email saying that we were on the shortlist too.
There are some big vegan podcasts out there so it’s not an award we were ever going to win – I mean, we’re not even the only vegan business podcast. However, not being one to miss a chance to shout about VBT, I would have definitely run a campaign to get our tribe out to vote for us had I realised! But it wasn’t until looking through the results (with the intention of doing a celebration post about how many of our VBT members had won an award this year) that I saw us sitting there, last place, in the best podcast category with 115 votes.
“Hey!” I shouted to my wife Lisa, “115 people have just voted for us as the best vegan podcast!”. “What, you mean our members?” she asked. “No, just random people!” I replied. “That’s awesome!” she shouted back.
You might not want to celebrate coming last, but when you have your own business you need to embrace the small wins – even if sometimes that win is just your business finding recognition. Getting shortlisted was recognition in itself, because we’re a niche within a niche, but the fact that more than 100 of the average vegan public had even heard of us, never mind voted for us, is awesome.
