We’re well into event season now, which means almost every weekend I’ve been in a different field, park, hall or sports-centre with my Vegan Business Tribe banner on my back, talking to people about running a vegan business. Some people I meet are vegans who already have a business but never considered it could be an extension of their vegan ethics; some people already have a ‘loud and proud’ vegan business; but many more people I speak to have dreams of starting one.
“They are a brilliant baker” I’ve been told many times by a proud partner pointing at their spouse “and I keep telling them they should start selling them”. “I’ve got this idea, I just don’t know how to start” is something I’ve heard so often that I’ve got a three-step plan for them to follow memorised as a response. Last weekend, one enthused woman half-shouted and half-pantomimed the outline of her fully-costed business plan at me over the thumping bass of the DJ’s speaker at Vegandale London. “I just don’t know how to get the money!” she finished with an exaggerated arms-out shrug to make sure I understood. I took her email address and said I’d send her our guide to how to fund a vegan business so she could make it happen.
As you know, starting a business is hard. For many it seems like there are too many barriers for it to happen. Lack of knowledge, lack of confidence, lack of money, lack of emotional support. But that’s why I do what I do. Whatever barriers you face in business, the routes past them are often fairly straight forward. You just need to find someone who’s already done it and get them to tell you how.
So next weekend I’ll be at Vegan Camp Out, the biggest vegan event in the UK with an estimated 10,000+ people in a field over 4 days. And I’ll be there, with my banner on my back, talking to a load more people about how they can use their business as their form of activism. Because Vegan Business Tribe is my form of activism, just like your business is yours.
