How to start a podcast
with Jim Moore, Bloody Vegan Productions
Jim Moore is best known as the presenter of The Bloody Vegans Podcast, but Jim is also the founder of Bloody Vegans Productions which helps vegan entrepreneurs launch and run their own podcast. In this session, Jim walks us through everything you need to do to start your own podcast (from choosing the right microphone and creating a good recording environment to getting to grips with editing software) and tips for marketing your podcast and improving your technique as you progress.
In this session:
- Why one-on-one interviews aren’t the only format you should consider for your podcast.
- How to create a good recording environment without having a studio.
- The difference between condenser and dynamic microphones, and why dynamic microphones are probably the right choice for the majority of podcasters.
- Considering a microphone with a USB connection vs XLR microphones.
- Why you should select a microphone based on the features you are going to use and the budget you have rather than just buying a brand.
- How to improve your vocal techniques – and how the angle of the microphone and the distance from your mouth all work together to change the tone of your voice.
- Using pop filters to avoid ‘plosives’ on your recording.
- Why it’s important to test, record and then listen back to improve the quality of your recordings.
- What software to use to record your podcast, including free software like Audacity on PC or Garage Band on Mac.
- What professional software is available if you want to invest a bit more to get more advanced editing options such as equalisers, compressors and noise gates to improve the quality of your playback.
- Why it’s better to try and get the recording right, rather than try to fix a poor recording with software afterwards.
- Why Zoom isn’t always the best option for recording guest interviews and the danger of using software that doesn’t produce separate audio files for each person.
- How using ‘double-ender’ software such as Riverside.fm and Squadcast will capture high-quality audio recordings on each person’s computer and then upload the files afterwards.
- Don’t let technology be a barrier to entry, get started with what you have first.
- Why recording a video of your podcast gives you more re-purposing options.
- How podcast hosting works, and how a good host will automate most of the process of supplying your podcast to all the major platforms such as Apple and Spotify.
- Why you are not tied to your podcast host and why it’s fairly simple to switch between them.
- The importance of naming your podcast so that people will be able to discover it when they are searching for a topic.
- Why you need to be very clear when naming your episodes and remember the majority of people are using a mobile device.
- Using audiograms to share snippets from your podcasts on social media.
- Leveraging other podcaster’s audiences and collaborating with other vegan podcasters.
- How to find out more if you need Jim’s help or support to launch your podcast, or improve your current one.
