Section 3: Creating and carrying out your marketing plan

A note on fun

I get frustrated when people approach their marketing as a chore.  If this is you then you are definitely doing it wrong.  The more creativity and energy you put into creating your plan, the better the outcome will be – I guarantee it.  Don’t think you have to do this on your own, gather your team (or your friends and partner if it’s just you in the business) around a flip chart and start pinning things to walls.  Order in the vegan pizza and maybe even throw in a glass of something stimulating (be that coffee or wine depending on your disposition!).  Come up with outrageous ideas together, and know that you can sleep on them and then apply your sanity filter later.  Remember why you started up your own business in the first place, to align your passion with how you make a living, so bring some of that passion out here and now!

If you ARE creating your marketing plan on your own, go somewhere where you have space to think.  Go sit in a cafe with your notebook or find a tree to sit under to draw your inspiration from.  Give yourself permission to take time out to focus on this because this isn’t just your company’s future we’re planning, it’s also yours.
